Frequently Asked Questions

Are your services covered under insurance?

Dr. Khan is an out-of-network provider and therefore does not accept insurance. There are multiple benefits to seeing an out-of-network psychiatrist. First, treatment is not constrained by only providing services that are billable to insurance. As a result, sessions can often be longer or more frequent, with increased flexibility in treatment options. In addition, not billing insurance offers increased privacy regarding your mental health treatment. Insurance companies require documentation from your sessions (with session notes and psychiatric diagnostic codes) in order to cover services. By seeing an out-of-network provider, you can avoid having to share this information.

Do you offer same-day appointments?

No. In the event of an emergency situation please call 911 or present to your nearest emergency room. The general procedure for Dr. Khan’s intake appointments includes scheduling an initial phone call prior to the first meeting to ensure that he is the right doctor for your current needs.

Are you offering in-person visits?

Yes. Dr. Khan offers in-person visits in Santa Monica (1849 Sawtelle Blvd #610, Los Angeles, CA 90025) and in Beverly Hills (8500 Wilshire Blvd Suite 740, Beverly Hills, CA 90211).

Do you offer virtual appointments?

Yes, Dr. Khan utilizes Zoom for Healthcare as the video platform. This platform is HIPAA compliant, thus ensuring increased privacy for your mental health treatment. Sessions are conducted using video software, and patients are expected to have functioning audio and video. Telephone sessions are not available at this time. Appointments cannot be held while in a moving car to ensure your safety. You are encouraged to conduct your appointment in a private space.

What is your appointment change and cancellation policy?

Please contact Dr. Khan if you are unable to make it to your appointment or need to reschedule the timing. All appointment cancellation and reschedule requests must be submitted at least 24 business hours in advance of the appointment, or else you will be charged at your regular customary fee for the missed session. This means that a change or cancellation request for an appointment scheduled for Monday at 8am will need to be submitted by the preceding Friday at 8am.

What is the difference between a psychiatrist and a psychologist?

A psychiatrist is a medical doctor/physician who attended medical school and is able to prescribe medications to treat a variety of mental health conditions. As physicians, psychiatrists complete 4 years of medical school, followed by 4 years of residency, followed by optional 1-2 year fellowship program(s). With this medical training, they are able to assess patients from both a biological/medical and psychological perspective. Psychologists undergo graduate training in psychotherapy and are not medical doctors (and therefore unable to prescribe medication in most states).

What is psychotherapy?

Psychotherapy or “talk therapy” is a general term used to describe treatment of mental health conditions through verbal and psychological techniques. Psychotherapy can be provided by a variety of different mental health professionals, including psychiatrists (MD or DO), psychologists (PhD or PsyD), licensed clinical social workers (LCSW), or licensed marriage and family therapists (LMFT). There are numerous modalities of psychotherapy, including psychodynamic psychotherapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, and dialectical behavioral therapy, amongst many others.
